Well MTV just dropped the bottom 6 inductees into the top 10 ‘hottest mc’s’ and this subject just needs to be addressed , after the list dropped on twitter hip-hop fans every were not impressed to say the least. People intend to get ‘Hottest’ with ‘Best’ , but what MTV , BET and every other hip-hop media outlet need to realise is their is a difference between a MC and just a ordinary rapper. From a hip-hop point of view a MC is more lyrical while a rapper is just for entertainment (i.e. Kreayshawn , Tyler The Creator , Lil Wayne etc.) Just like a musician and a artist. A musician make’s music , while a artist creates timeless art in music form.
Back to the MTV list , the list so far consists of;
10. Wale
9. Wiz Khalifa
8. Big Sean
7. Meek Mill
6. Jay Z
Weather you’re a fan of Jay Z or not you can’t deny he’s a hip-hop legend and somewhat of an icon. To put Jay Z on top of the list with fellow rappers who are hardly mc’s themselves is basically a slap to hip-hop’s mouth. There is no-one on a commercial level that is doing it better then Jay Z himself , with being able to stay relevant longer then anyone else (maybe excluding Snoop Dogg) in the hip-hop game and still making nice hits. With a almost garunteed position for a YMCMB or a MMG canidate for the top 3 spots , hip-hop media really push real rap music out the door and this is the reason why commercial rap is in a bad place right now.
Perhaps if MTV/BET/XXL etc. would know the difference between a rapper and a MC, cause of conflict would not be relevant right now and maybe their lists would be understandable.
